Emigration to New York from Ireland between 1846 and 1854.

As part of a wider historical project which studies migration patterns to the US we sourced a dataset which captured key data points from the manifests of ships that sailed from Irish and British ports to New York between 1846 and 1854. In order to capture the data relating to Irish travelers we filtered out the non-Irish travellers and in order to exclude any null values we filtered out any records that had data missing in either the ‘County/State of Origin’ or ‘Intended Place of Settlement’ fields. This reduced the original dataset of 24,126 to 15,031. The Sankey diagram below shows the movement between each county in Ireland and the numbers of travellers to their intended place of settlement.
